Turning Negativity Into Insight: Julie De Jesus on Interviewing Kevin Franke and What the Comments Reveal About Us

Tony sits down with his friend and Love, ADHD co-host, Julie De Jesus, to unpack her recent interview with Kevin Franke, ex-husband of Ruby Franke. Ruby, the former “8 Passengers” YouTuber, pled guilty in late 2023 to multiple counts of aggravated child abuse and, along with her business partner Jodi Hildebrandt, was sentenced in February 2024 to up to 30 years in prison under Utah law.

While Tony originally planned to ask Julie about Kevin, the conversation took a different turn: the tidal wave of comments Julie received after posting her interview. With humor, honesty, and therapeutic insight, Tony and Julie read through some of those YouTube comments out loud, responding in real time. They explore why people are so quick to judge, why emotions often masquerade as facts, and how online criticism reveals more about the commenter than the person being critiqued.

You’ll hear candid reflections on:

What Kevin’s story stirs up in people (and why)
How emotional immaturity shows up in the comment section (projection, black-and-white thinking, and mistaking feelings for truth)
Why leaving abusive situations is never as simple as outsiders believe
The concept of “whole object relations” — holding multiple emotions at once
How Julie navigated negativity while staying grounded and authentic

This episode is part deep dive into psychology, part raw behind-the-scenes of content creation, and part hilarious reading of unfiltered internet comments. If you’ve ever wondered why strangers online lash out—or how to handle criticism with both compassion and boundaries—this one’s for you.

Julie and Tony revisit the topic of “executive functioning” and explore what embracing “executive dysfunction” looks like. They discuss how individuals with ADHD know what tools they should be using to organize their lives; they struggle with executing these tasks consistently. They discuss strategies like externalizing to-do lists, setting up automatic payments, using password managers, and making processes enjoyable to combat inconsistency. They continue to advocate for acceptance and the creation of systems to support the brain processes for a more consistent approach toward task completion. And then the episode falls apart as Julie’s computer freezes and Tony rushes to capture a screenshot of Julie’s “frozen face” only to then realize the file was lost…until now!

Julie opens up about the exhilarating aspects of hyperfocus, especially in projects, and the diverse manifestations of impulsivity. Julie opens up about her journey of self-discovery and mental health awareness, revealing how getting the right label was a turning point in her life. It's not all about forgetfulness or hyperfocus; it's also about the intense waves of emotion that can catch you off guard. Julie candidly shares her journey through divorce and the steep learning curve of managing her emotions solo. Meanwhile, Tony reveals his own strategy of humor as a coping mechanism, and together, they discuss the surprising ways ADHD can turn emotional turbulence into a form of challenging superpower.

Do you ever find yourself entranced by the scent of fresh-baked cookies a little more than most? Or maybe you're someone who feels on edge because of certain textures or loud noises? If so, you will want to tune into this eye-opening episode of "Love, ADHD" with your hosts, Julie Lee and Tony Overbay. In this episode, they dive deep into the world of sensory sensitivities, an often overlooked aspect of ADHD that can seriously impact daily life. Julie, a former second-grade teacher, talks about her experiences in the classroom and as someone who suspected she had ADHD. She highlights how the constant sensory stimulation can be overwhelming for children with ADHD, making it difficult for them to concentrate. Julie shares her recent experience back in the classroom as a substitute teacher and how her new understanding of ADHD helped her identify and see a particular student more for who he is rather than the “problem child” that he may be typically experienced as. Julie talks about how medication has helped her manage these sensitivities, but they're far from eliminated.

The episode goes beyond the classroom, exploring the interconnected challenges of hyperactivity, focus issues, and sensory sensitivity that kids with ADHD face. Tony discusses how the quest for external validation can affect a child's self-image and raises the question of the relationship between ADHD and sensory overload in the ever-developing conversation of whether or not ADHD should be included on the Autism spectrum. In a personal anecdote, Julie shares her own sensory quirks, like feeling overwhelmed by an array of scents or her strong preference for loud music and a good cologne. Tony and Julie agree that understanding and managing sensory sensitivities are crucial for children and adults with ADHD. They wrap up by encouraging listeners to embrace their unique sensory experiences and strengths, believing that self-acceptance can lead to great accomplishments in life. Don't miss out on this enlightening discussion!

In Episode 5 of "Love, ADHD," Tony and Julie touch on the 3rd of 5 things that you didn't know you didn't know about ADHD: the ability to hyperfocus and, more specifically, the paradoxical nature of ADHD. The hosts take listeners on a rollercoaster of relatable experiences and insights as they share their own journeys with ADHD. From Julie's frustration with new technology to Tony's reflections on how ADHD embodies paradoxes—such as a lack of focus combined with the ability to hyperfocus—they offer a candid glimpse into their daily challenges. Their discussion also touches upon rejection sensitivity and the coping mechanisms they've adopted, further highlighting ADHD's complex, paradoxical tendencies like procrastination that intersect with acceptance and rejection sensitivity.

Despite the serious topics, Julie and Tony manage to inject humor and lightheartedness into the episode. They openly joke about their struggles, like their constant fear of late fees and underachievement in various aspects of life. Even as they reflect on their journeys of getting diagnosed and the various therapies they've tried, they emphasize the importance of finding a balance in life—be it in oversharing or setting boundaries. The episode becomes not just an exploration of ADHD and its paradoxes but also a celebration of the hosts' progress, little victories, and the importance of authenticity and true connections. This episode is a comforting reminder that while ADHD poses challenges, it also brings opportunities for personal growth and a deeper understanding of oneself.
