Episode 52: Speak For Yourself

As a poet and single mom, Marianne moved to a new area looking for a safe space to share her work and her heart. This journey led her to creating an open mic organization where creative writers come together every Thursday evening at 7:30 PM. Enlighten bakery has become a safe place where writers and dreamers feel seen and heard.

It is often those who feel marginalized that are hungry for a space to feel noticed, to have their lives witnessed by people who are willing to hear their experiences. Marianne encourages anyone who is struggling to write, write it down. Healing comes when we share our experiences, even if at first our sharing is just with a piece of paper.

  1. Thank you for this podcast. Maybe it’s time I get back into poetry? I don’t write poetry… anymore. Did for about a year 30+ years ago. But do have a blog & agree that writing can be powerful!

Here’s a link to one of those poems from long ago. There’s a link in this to another poem. Seems I only wrote poems when in the dark pit of depression. Should be able to write poems again cuz I’m totally depressed.

  2. I related with what Marianne was sharing, of people clicking their fingers together when they heard something in another’s writing that resonated with their hearts. At my support group, we took turns writing our thoughts to a prompt and then sharing our writing. I loved the safe space we quickly created with each other for expressing our vulnerability.
